Prompt: How can we use our instruction technique to help the audience understand the material better?

As you all know, Nanjing massacre is an unfamiliar topic to non-Chinese people with English-learning background. We want to take into account of the language barrier that most English-speaking audience might have by providing the lesson in English. For those who are struggling to listen to the unfamiliar topic in English, we will provide embedded subtitles in all the video for those who have listening issues such as hearing loss or listening barrier. By providing the subtitle, people who have issues listening can follow the subtitle instead to capture information from the videos as an alternative way of learning.

The primary course delivery method will be face-to-face synchronous teaching style. However, we will provide online learning as well by providing the lesson including videos, reading articles, quizzes and interactive learning activities through the website. By providing an online offering of the course, people will have more flexibility to complete the course in case if they are sick or need to self quarantine if necessary. Furthermore, all the videos in online environment will have embedded subtitles as well for those who have barriers listening or prefer reading the subtitle to retain new material more effectively. This alternative technique is to help them comprehend the same amount of material as other students so that they are able to complete the activities online as well.

For class participation, students who are taking the course face-to-face will be graded by teacher’s observation on how active they are asking and answering questions in the class. As for online students, they are graded by the class participation based on asking questions in the discussion portal in the online classroom website.

For the interactive activities, every students both online or face-to-face will need to write a personal reflection on the Nanjing massacre topic and analyze the topics based on their own interpretation. The writing doesn’t need to be academic but it needs to reflect how well the students have comprehended Nanjing massacre.
